Chicken Shawarma
Shawarma is an iconic street food of the Middle East that has gained worldwide popularity. Our recipe will help you recreate the delicious flavour of Chicken or Beef Shawarma at home for dinner in no time! Ingredients
2 lb. - chicken (we use Chicken thighs)
1 onion, thinly sliced
2 tbsp Hogtown Shawarma Seasoning
1 tbsp of lemon juice
2 medium-sized tomatoes
1/2 sweet onion
4 leaves of lettuce
pickled turnips and or Lebanese sour pickles (optional)
fresh mint (optional)
4 Pitas
Instructions
Prep the Protein: Slice the chosen protein and add it to the bowl. Then, add the Shawarma seasoning and mix well to coat the protein. Slice the yellow onions and add them to the protein mixture, mixing until well combined. Cover and set aside. Refrigerate if you are not using it right away.
Prep the Garnishes: Slice the tomatoes, lettuce, and sweet onion, and set them aside. You can optionally add pickled turnips and/or Lebanese sour pickles, along with fresh mint, for a fresh pop.
Cook the Protein: Pan fry method - with 1 tbsp neutral oil. Add shredded protein and spread evenly. Let it cook for 4 to 6 minutes, then stir. Cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes to ensure it is thoroughly cooked. BBQ method – Grill the chicken thigh pieces whole for 4-6 minutes a side. (Once it is cooked, move it to a plate to rest for a few minutes. Slice up and serve.)
Assemble Sandwich: Lay the pita on the plate, add toum (Garlic Sauce) and/or tahini sauce, and top with chicken or beef shawarma, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and pickled turnips. Wrap it tightly and enjoy.
Serve family-style: Add each ingredient to the table individually, and let everyone assemble their sandwich or plate.
Shawarma bowl: rice, protein, and topped with a veggie mixture, drizzled with preferred sauce.
